In the 2026 general election, California voters decided the outcome of 14 statewide ballot measures on topics ranging from environmental review changes to taxing billionaires, to requiring voter ID at the polls.
While Proposition 40 – the billionaire tax – dominated in attention and spending, it was far from the only proposition that had voters divided.
The measure with the most controversy, Proposition 39 – which would have changed voter ID practices – was defeated, according to a late Tuesday night call by the Associated Press.
