Over the weekend, word spread of imminent store closures for dozens of Starbucks stores across California, 36 in Southern California.
The Seattle coffee giant is cutting back its store count in North America, closing 250 underperforming stores or those that don’t match CEO Brian Niccol’s vision to return the coffee shops to their pre-pandemic cafe vibe.
Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams wrote in a memo to employees that the cafes, most of which closed by Saturday, either weren’t delivering acceptable financial results or could not provide the kind of experience that Starbucks wants for customers and employees, according to an Associated Press report.
A note on the front door at Starbucks on Hospitality Lane in San Bernardino indicated the store had been marked for closure.
“Many of you will be thinking of your favorite barista. Please know what we’re working closely to support our partners through this transition,” it reads. “We hope you’ll visit us at a nearby Starbucks where we’d be honored to continue bringing joy and coffee to your day.”
A union that represents workers at 700 Starbucks stores in the U.S. that have voted to unionize said 20 such stores are among the 250 that closed last week, AP wrote.
The company said it would relocate workers to other Starbucks stores where possible.
Niccol. the former CEO of Chipotle who moved its headquarters to Newport Beach to be close to his family, assumed the Starbucks helm in 2024. He soon launched a restructuring effort to boost Starbucks’s profitability and efficiency.
A year ago, 69 cafes in California shuttered among 627 overall closures.
The newest closure list includes six stores in Orange County, four in the Inland Empire, 20 in Los Angeles County and six in San Diego County.
From Central to Northern California, 28 stores closed.
Most employees were notified Thursday, Sept. 24 that their stores were closing.
